The Upper Middle Rhine, a beautiful, romantic wine valley, also a UNESCO site and one of my favorite day trip to introduce friends and family to Germany. There are many things to see and do, and if you want to do it all, recommend you spend more than 2 days. One of my favorite thing to do is the ring tour of Rudesheim. Rudesheim Am Rhein is very popular with tourists; quaint and small with the Drosselgasse as the main attraction.  Drosselgasse is a small street packed with souvenirs shops and restaurants. In the past used to be a path where boats owners will bring their items to their home. But there is much more than Drosselgasse, so take advantage of the RIng Tour to visit Rudesheim, as well as Bingen Am Rhein and Assmannshausen.

You can accomplish this in two ways: if starting at Bingen Am Rhine: buy the tickets thru Bingen-Rudesheimer boat liner. If starting at Rudesheim Am Rhein buy the tickets at the Tourist  Information center or any partners such as the Rudesheim Seilbahn (cable car) ticket office. The following details sets you up to start the tour at Bingen Am Rhein.

Ring Tour ticket includes:

– Ferry from Bingen to Rüdesheim.
– Rudesheim Seilbahn (cable car) to the Nierderwald.                                                                                                                – Hike (3km) to a Chair Lift taking you down to Assmannshausen.
– A return ferry or cruise ship back to Bingen.

Cost: Adults, 14,00Euro / Kids (5-15), 7,00Euro

The Ring Tour can be accomplish at your own pace, just make sure you don’t miss the last boat leaving from Assmannshausen (1815).

This tour stars in Bingen. Bingen Am Rhein’s  promenade is the place to hang out. In 2008, Bingen hosted the state garden show and since, the town display many garden themes. Every year there are different displays. I recently visited and noticed some of the displays were not there and a huge construction expansion was taking place. However the promenade has much more to offer; there are areas to lounge, have a picnic and enjoy the view and passing cargo boats, cruises and ferries. There is also a little park for the young one, a vinotek and restaurants. Here are few pics;

When you are ready to start the ring tour, head towards Bingen-Rudesheimer ticket office and purchase your ticket. You will receive several tickets printout, the boat schedule for that day and a company brochure.

_DSC2466The ferry takes about 10 minutes to cross the Rhein and will drop you off to the eastern most side of the town, here you can start your tour and sight see Rudesheim.  Highly recommend you start at the Information office or research about what Rudesheim has to offer to get an idea what you would like to do.

After you complete your to do list for Rudesheim, head out to the Seilbahn station and have your camera ready to capture the view.

At the top of the Niederwald is, Germania memorial, it commemorates the unification of Germany around 1870-80s. This is a great spot to stop and have a picnic. Don’t forget the wine!

P1019133The hike for the Assmannshausen chairlift as you face Germania will be on your left, follow the yellow sign with the word Seilbahn Assmannshausen. The hike is about 30 minutes long.

Have you camera ready!

Walked around the village or have a mid afternoon dinner just make sure to check the time so you don’t miss the last boat departing back to Bingen.

From Bingen you can also take the Rhine River cruise, but I will share that on a later post. Enjoy!

    I liked the photos of the vineyards–made me think about what that plant, its fruits and its leaves have meant to humans in their gardens and landscapes of how many millennia?! Thank you.
